CAIS Policy
| About AIS Publications | | The Association for Information Systems (AIS) began publishing two electronic journals in 1999 - Communications of AIS and The Journal of AIS. These journals are designed to be complementary and the first part of this statement of editorial policy is common to both. In content, each will fulfill the role usually associated with the terms "communications" and "journal". Communications is intended to foster the free flow of ideas within the IS community; its emphasis is on originality, importance, and cogency of ideas; it is also a vehicle for case studies, survey articles, tutorials, and other materials of general interest to the IS community. The Journal will be a classical, reviewed outlet for research with every intention of being equal to the best in the field.
Articles should be submitted to one of the journals in accordance with its content and the way the authors wish to have the submission processed. In case of doubt as to which journal is most appropriate for a particular article, it may be submitted to either and the editors will decide which one is most suitable. |
| Electronic Publication | | Both journals will be delivered to subscribers electronically. There will be no paper copy! The entire publication process from submission, through review, revision, and final edit will be electronic. Electronic publication has a number of implications:
- The cycle from submission to delivery will be shortened. Every effort will be made to ensure that reviews are submitted in a timely manner; once an article has been accepted for publication, there will be no need to wait for the next available issue after such and such a number of publication cycles. Given the nature of the delivery system, articles will be delivered to subscribers immediately when they become available. The numbering system will be Vol. X (year), No. y. For example, the third article in 1999 will be Volume 1 (1999), No. 3
- Authors will be required to adhere strictly to the publication guidelines in terms of software and text formats to facilitate the rapid turnaround, which we intend to make a hallmark of these publications.

| About CAIS | | The primary role of a professional society is to facilitate communications among its members. Communications of AIS carries out this role by publishing articles on a wide range of subjects of interest to the membership beyond research results.
Specifically, Communications of AIS aims to provide an outlet for subjects falling outside the focus of many research journals including:
- tutorials on the state of the art
- applications
- cases
- opinion
- innovation and novel concepts
- teaching
- international work and points of view
Articles can deal with technical subjects (e.g., data base design, systems analysis) managerial subjects (e.g., strategic use, implementation) or current topics (e.g., outsourcing, data warehousing, data mining, business intelligence, CRM, knowledge management). No matter what the particular area of an article, a sound conceptual basis is required.
All manuscripts submitted to Communications of AIS should be submitted to the CAIS Scholar One site.
Manuscripts submitted to Communications of AIS are subject to one of two types of review: Traditional peer review, or editorial review. Peer review is managed by an Associate Editor and involves at least two reviewers. Editorial review involves reviews by an Associate Editor and the Editor-in-Chief. Editorial review is generally faster but just as rigorous as peer review. Authors decide which review process is appropriate for their submissions.
Communications of AIS does not have page limits. Authors are encouraged to submit backup material (such as detailed data, explanatory appendices, screen images, survey measures, and programs) to create a richness in the articles that can usually not be found in conventional printed journals because of their limited space. |
| Archiving | | As part of its mission, Communications will maintain a digital archive of all published articles. |
| Author Information | | Articles must be submitted in Word format to the the CAIS Scholar One site.
The bodies of articles may include text, tables, and figures only in order to ensure the widest accessibility even in less technologically endowed environments. The body of the article should represent a stand-alone document. Links and multimedia supplements may be included in one or more appendices. Readers will have the option of downloading articles with such appendices as HTML documents.
The official language of the Communications of AIS is English.
Submission of an article to CAIS implies the authors’ certification that the manuscript is not copyrighted and is not currently under review by any other journal or conference proceedings.
Members of AIS must adhere to the AIS Code of Research Conduct in their work. Members who believe their work has been plagiarized or subjected to other scholarly misconduct are urged to consult Guidelines for a Victim. AIS Council's process for dealing with allegations of scholarly misconduct in the Association's journals and proceedings is detailed in AIS Research Conduct Committee Process Guidelines.

| Copyright | | Submission of an article to CAIS implies the authors' certification that the manuscript is not copyrighted and is not currently under review by any other journal or conference proceedings.
Copyright to all articles published by the Communications of AIS must be transferred by the authors to AIS prior to publication. Authors will be required to fill out and sign a form to this effect.
Electronic or print copies may be made for non-commercial personal or class-room use. In cases of classroom copies, copyright should be attributed to AIS on each copy.
Authors may include a copy of their article on their Web page as long as it is clearly noted that AIS owns the copyright and use for profit is not allowed. Such an author version must be identical to the final published version, and include a link to CAIS.

| Subscriptions | | All members of the Association for Information Systems receive complementary subscriptions to the Communications of the AIS. Information and rates about joining AIS is available. Nonmembers of AIS can subscribe to the journal for an annual fee of $40 by going to the journal subscription page. University Library and Multiuser Subscriptions are available to all institutions. Membership in AIS is not required. These subscriptions provide access to anyone accessing the journal from a specific domain such as baylor.edu without having to supply a user id and password. There is no limit to the number of users or concurrent users. The cost for library and multiuser subscriptions is $135 per year. Go to the subscription page. |
